Cascina Baricchi 'Riva della Coda' Barbera d’Alba 2021

Cascina Baricchi 'Riva della Coda' Barbera d’Alba 2021

90 pts Vinous (Galloni)
Drinking Window 2025 - 2031
The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Riva della Coda is a heady, bombastic wine. Succulent blackberry fruit, licorice, spice, espresso and menthol saturate the palate. This potent Barbera is certainly not shy. Stylistically, it is also quite opulent relative to the Barbarescos. The 2021 cries for food. - By Antonio Galloni on October 2025 Natale and Francesca Simonetta turn out some of the most distinctive wines in Barbaresco. Their wines, released later than most, give consumers an opportunity to taste wines with a bit of bottle age, something that is so essential for fine Barbaresco. Their Barbaresco Riserva Rose delle Casasse, made from the rare Nebbiolo Rose clone, is one of the most singular wines in the entire appellation.

Vineyard:
Sourced from a small parcel at the Baricchi estate.
Soil:
The soil is a mainly clay with some limestone, chalk and sand.
Viticulture:
Hand harvested from a vineyard planted in 1954.
Vinification:
Ferments in stainless steel with a ten day maceration.
Aging:
Aged in large 24HL neutral botti for 24 months followed by an additional 12 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Note: Intense ruby red tending towards dark. The wine presents itself with floral notes on the nose, at times still vinous and with hints of fresh fruit such as plum, cherry and raspberry, herbaceous and slightly spicy, all well harmonized with the woody notes, given by the aging in wood. On the palate it is elegant and harmonious, with good persistence, enveloping and pleasant in its freshness. A complete wine suitable for dishes of good character that enhance its essential robustness.
