Quintodecimo Grande Cuvee 'Luigi Moio' 2023
2022: 95 pts Vinous Media (Eric Guido)
The 2022 Grande Cuvée Luigi Moio is impossible to ignore, with a seductive bouquet that blends crushed stones and vanilla custard with a savory tinge of ginger and freshly sliced nectarines. This opens with a lovely inner sweetness, complicated by depths of salty minerality as crisp orchard fruits saturate the senses beneath an air of pretty inner florals. The 2022 tapers off lightly structured, spicy and long, with a reverberation of youthful tension and tantalizing acidity that maintains fantastic freshness. What a beauty. The Grande Cuvée ferments in a combination of stainless steel and 60% new French oak, which is masterfully integrated.
The Grande Cuvée Luigi Moio is born from the union of three white vines – Greco, Falanghina and Fiano - which in Quintodecimo are already produced in the mono-varietal version. In this wine each of the combined parts contributes more than their simple sum, creating the conditions for an olfactory and gustatory amplification of the wine and for its greater longevity.
COMPOSITION
The percentage of each of the three grapes is as follows: 40% Greco, 20% Falanghina, 40% Fiano
Greco is obtained from a single plot of the Giallo d'Arles estate located in Tufo,
center of the Greco di Tufo DOCG production area. The soil is marly-sandstone with a
high clay content and a good supply of limestone, the exposure is south-west,
the altitude is 400 meters with a slope of 15%. The Falanghina comes from the band
median of the small hill of Quintodecimo in Mirabella Eclano. The soil is loose with the presence of clay, the exposure is to the west and the altitude is 380 meters with a slope of 10%. Fiano is a selection from the Exultet vineyard, located in Lapio at 600 meters above sea level in one of the most renowned points for the cultivation of Fiano di Avellino DOCG. The soil, predominantly clayey, it is crossed about a meter deep by a band of "lapilli" which due to their porosity favor a constant water supply to the vines. The exposure is south-west with a slope of 20%.
WINEMAKING
After manual harvesting in small 15 kg boxes, the bunches of grapes are subjected to
soft pressing. 60% fermentation takes place in new French oak barriques and 40% in stainless steel tanks at a temperature between 18-20%.
ELEVAGE
At the end of fermentation the wine ages for eight months on the yeasts, of which six months afterwards the assembly of the three mono-varietal wines. After bottling, the bottles rest for another two years in a horizontal position in the company's vaults for the time to complete the work, allowing the wine to reach its most complete expression.
