Sadie Family Skurfberg 2024
97 points Tim Atkin More north than Magnetic North," says Eben Saide, teasing his friend Chris Alheit, whose equally famous wine comes from an adjacent parcel on similarly red, mineral-rich sandstone soils. Rich, dense, layered and complex, it's a Chenin Blanc with mouth-watering acidity, flavours of lemon zest and green apple and wafts of wildflowers and ocean breezes. (2025)
96 pts Wine Advocate: "The Sadie Family 2024 Citrusdal Mountain Die Distriksreeks Skurfberg is a beautifully linear Chenin Blanc marked by crystalline salinity, mineral precision and high-elevation freshness. Notes of citrus peel and wet stone ride a focused, tightly wound palate that emphasizes purity. "We don't want to add things to our wines, but we don't want to subtract either," says proprietor Eben Sadie. Drawn from 65-year-old vines on iron and quartz-rich sandstone soils high on the Skurfberg plateau, this wine captures the tension and altitude-driven clarity that define the site. This is one of the most intriguing wines in this excellent portfolio. Drink 2026-2040. (02/26/26)."
TK Notes: Hailing from the dry, sandy sandstone slopes of the Citrusdal Mountain, the 2024 Skurfberg is made from Chenin Blanc sourced from old bush vines. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented in foudre, the wine matures on the lees for 12 months. This vintage displays ripe tropical fruit alongside classic Granny Smith apple, all balanced by a long, bright line of acidity. Slightly more open in texture than previous years, it remains precise and linear, with excellent aging potential.
Producer Notes: This 2024 Skurfberg vintage displays some riper tropical fruit alongside the usual Granny Smith apple fresh greener flavours. This vintage however, has some viscosity to it, balanced by a very bright and long acidity finish. This is a more linear version of the vineyard expression, and the wine should fill out with time in the bottle.
