Yann Bertrand Fleurie Cuvee Emile 2023
Our first shot at this one, Emile comes from the oldest vines of the Bertrand holdings and is named after his daughter.
Our Tasting Note: A fragrant swirl of ripe cherry, wild strawberries and very subtle rose petals, underpinned by subtle smoky granitic minerality. On the palate it's medium-bodied, with silky tannins and bright acidity enlivening pure red-fruit flavours, while the finish leaves a lingering trace of iron-tinged rock and fine herbal spice. Elegant, composed and quietly confident.
Named after Yann Bertrand's first child, the Cuvée Emile is produced only in exceptional years from the oldest vines at the domaine. Vinification and elevage is the same as with the cuvée Vieilles Vignes, and the rare Cuvée Emile is also held back at least an additional year before release (sometimes longer).
Vineyard: Grand Pré
Soil type: Sandy granite. Yann describes this terroir as being particularly fragile, acidic, and mostly sand based, fom vines 80-100 years old and just a smal .8 slice of this vineyard at 200-450m ASL
Pruning: Gobelet
Vinification: Cold carbonic maceration for 10 days without pump-overs.
Elevage: 50% in Demi muids of 600L, and 50% in 225L. All vessels coming from Savoie that were used for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Douce Noire for 9 months. Bottled unfiltered
