Domaine du Pas de l’Escalette "Les Clapas" Rouge 2023
$26.99 on 6+(code: 6saves2)
The price on this wine is ludicrous, so much wine, so much character is packed into this bottle. If you love Northern Rhone wines in warmer years with good acidity, this hits that mark, think a young and vibrant Saint-Joseph. Lightly structured and fresh, with fruit, violets, and minerality.
Tasting Note: A medium+ red and purple, bright red edges. An expressive and full nose shows notes of red to dark red fruits like cherry, currants, and blackberry, with subtle olive tapenade, savory spice notes, subtle violet and garrigue with crushed dusty rocks. The palate is med bodied, fresh and vibrant, with medium tannins and medium, well integrated acidity, a med+ to intense palate is persistent with a long, fruit, spice and savory fresh finish! Excellent!
Variety: Syrah 50%, Carignan 30%, Grenache 20%
Vineyard: 50 year-old vines planted at 350 meters (1,200 feet)
Appellation: Terrasses du Larzac AOC
Soil: Limestone and clay
Viticulture: certified organic FR-BIO-01 and certified Biodynamic by Biodyvin
Vinification: 50% Destemmed. Maceration for 21 days. Traditional vinification with limited intervention on the grapes. Alcoholic fermentation in 50hl wooden vats with indigenous yeast. Malolactic fermentation in wooden vats. Aged for 1 year in wooden vats.
Importer: Syrah steps forward to make Clapas rouge the price/quality winner of Julien and Delphine’s very strong line-up. The tank sample I tried this winter was dominated by tapenade and fresh dark berry aromas. Delphine thinks it might be the best vintage of Les Clapas they’ve produced, in two decades of farming this singular landscape.
